MimicKit vs ColorZilla: cloud library vs standalone eyedropper.
ColorZilla is the original — around since the mid-2000s (Firefox first, Chrome shortly after), one of the most-installed color-picker extensions ever shipped, and the eyedropper most senior designers default to. It picks colors, builds a page palette, and ships a standalone CSS gradient generator. MimicKit is the modern alternative: same eyedropper and palette tools, but with a cloud-synced library across every device, a weighted palette that mirrors what people actually see, and CSS / fonts / SVGs / contrast extraction in the same panel.

Where ColorZilla wins
-
Firefox, not just Chromium. ColorZilla ships for Firefox and Chrome. MimicKit is Chromium-only. If your daily browser is Firefox, ColorZilla is the answer.
-
The CSS gradient generator nobody else copied. ColorZilla's gradient generator (the standalone tool) is still one of the cleanest ways to build a CSS linear/radial gradient. MimicKit doesn't have a gradient builder.
-
Roughly two decades of brand recognition. ColorZilla has been around since the mid-2000s (Firefox first, then Chrome). Most senior designers have used it at some point. Defaulting to it is a safe call with no learning curve.

Free, with no upsell. No Pro tier, no cloud account, no email signup. Install it and move on.
Where MimicKit wins
-
Cloud-synced palette library across devices. Save a color on your laptop, see it on your desktop next morning. ColorZilla stores everything locally — switch machines, your library is gone.
-
Weighted palette extraction. MimicKit sorts the page palette by how much screen area each color occupies. The top color is the brand color you actually see, not the first one in the DOM. ColorZilla returns a flat unsorted list.
-
OKLCH support, not just HEX/RGB/HSL. Modern color spaces (OKLCH) handle perceptual lightness correctly, which matters for design systems with consistent tonal scales. Tailwind v4 ships with OKLCH defaults — MimicKit can return that natively.
-
One extension instead of seven. Colors are useful; so are fonts, CSS, SVGs and contrast. With ColorZilla you'd pair it with WhatFont, CSS Scan, SVG Gobbler and a contrast checker. MimicKit covers all of it in one panel.
-
Built for the AI workflow. Save a palette → export as Tailwind config → paste into your Cursor / Claude project. MimicKit's "Generate Design System" produces a full token set plus an AI prompt with build instructions.
Best for
Choose ColorZilla if…
You browse in Firefox, you need an offline eyedropper with no account, and you don't care about CSS, fonts, SVGs or cloud sync. Or you specifically want the CSS gradient generator.
Choose MimicKit if…
You're in Chrome, you want one extension that covers color picker, palette extractor, CSS-to-Tailwind, font finder, SVG/image download and contrast scanner — with a cloud library that follows you across devices.
Switching from ColorZilla
ColorZilla's saved colors live in browser local storage and can't be exported in a structured way, so there's no automated migration. The recommended path: install MimicKit, leave ColorZilla pinned, and re-save your top palettes into MimicKit's cloud library over a week of normal use. After that, the cloud sync becomes the reason you can't go back.
FAQ
Is MimicKit a free ColorZilla alternative?
Yes. The color picker, eyedropper and palette extractor are all in MimicKit's free tier. Cloud library is also free up to 10 saved items. Pro (€6/mo or €49 lifetime) unlocks unlimited saves and the design system export.
Does MimicKit work in Firefox like ColorZilla?
No. MimicKit is a Manifest V3 Chromium extension — Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera. Firefox support is on the roadmap but not shipped.
What's "weighted" palette extraction?
Instead of listing every color the page uses, MimicKit measures the pixel coverage of each color and sorts the palette by how much screen area it occupies. The top colors are the brand colors people actually perceive — not the first hex code the parser found in the stylesheet.
Can I export my palette as a Tailwind config?
Yes — Pro feature. MimicKit's "Generate Design System" exports the page's palette plus typography scale, spacing, radii and shadows as a Tailwind v3 / v4 config, CSS variables, JSON tokens, Vue, or standalone HTML.
Does MimicKit have a CSS gradient generator like ColorZilla?
No standalone gradient builder. MimicKit can copy gradients from existing elements on a page, but it doesn't ship the visual gradient editor ColorZilla is known for.
